Trails in our area:

Chippewa & Rusk County Snowmobile and ATV Trails

Over 248 miles of snowmobile trails, as well as many miles of groomed club trails, offering exciting riding. The trail system travels through most of our friendly communities and will connect you with thousands of miles of other Wisconsin trails. Some of the more scenic sections of the trail include the segments from Jim Falls north through the County Forest, from Holcombe to Stanley, and from Hwy 40 west and north to X.

Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Unit

The Chippewa Moraine is a 4000 acre state recreation area that lies along the terminal moraine formed by the Wisconsin Glacier about 10,000 years ago. The area is wonderfully unique and has many prominent glacial features such as kettle lakes, kames, eskers and ice-walled lake plains.

As part of the National Ice Age Trail, 23 miles of hiking trails lend the  hiker a chance to observe many glacial features from the trail. Most of the trail is wild, undeveloped and very scenic. 1.9 miles east of the junction of Hwy 40 on Cty M, New Auburn. (715)967-2800

Hickory Ridge and River Road X-C ski trails offer trails and loops for all levels of ability. Ask us about many more trails in our area.

NEW! Old Abe Multi-use Trail

Cornell is the trailhead for a wonderful, new 20-mile, unique trail connecting Brunet Island State Park (near Cornell/Holcombe) and Wissota State Park (near Chippewa Falls).

Along with a scenic ride following the Chippewa River, there are stopping places for educational tours, plus an abundance of recreational activities at either end.

Stop at the monument and 10-foot statue of "Old Abe," the bald eagle mascot of Wisconsin's Civil War 12th Regiment along the Chippewa River.  Old Abe, it is said, screamed and swooped, and led troops into battle, to the chagrin of the opposing forces.  Enjoy the special wayside wildflower park and trail that are part of the Old Abe exhibit.

Special things to do in our area:

View the famous Holcombe Indian at the Lake Holcombe Town Hall, hand-carved in 1876 to watch over the dam. Hear how the Holcombe Indian was swept away in a flood, recovered, and stands guard over the "river men" who worked in the area during the logging era.

See the World’s Largest Wood Stacker and recall logging heydays at the logging museum & visitor center in Cornell.

Visit the Cobban Bridge spanning the Chippewa River near Jim Falls, preserved because the community was unwilling to see it destroyed.  The Cobban Bridge Historical Marker, south on Hwy 178, describes the history of the bridge and its unique construction.  The bridge is the oldest of its kind in Wisconsin!

Browse at nearby shops and factory outlets, featuring items such as neckties, sweatshirts, and crafts with Northwoods flavors and designs.
